Four years on, Mariupol still feels like the moment a lot of people decided mass civilian death could be filed under “complicated geopolitics” and moved on. A theater marked for children was bombed while people were sheltering inside. That wasn’t fog of war, it was a choice. I get that people are exhausted and every week brings another horror, but the shrug around Ukraine has gotten ugly. You don’t have to support every policy proposal to say plainly that Russia targeted civilians and Europe should stop acting like memory alone counts as solidarity.
