A lot of the outrage around anyone cutting up a book misses the point of what books are for. They’re not holy objects. They’re tools, records, arguments, art, sometimes all at once. If taking one apart teaches people how it was made, how labor and materials shaped it, that’s not vandalism to me. I care way more about libraries getting gutted, schools banning titles, and publishers squeezing authors than I do about one printed object losing its aura.
