Seeing the news about those Guard members hit me harder than I expected. Not because politicians post the usual condolences, but because these deaths always land in small towns and regular families first, long before Washington argues about strategy. We ask a lot from National Guard troops, and then half the country barely notices unless the headline is local. I don't think every mission overseas is pointless, but if we're sending people into danger, the public and Congress should have to own that choice out loud, not treat it like background noise until a helicopter goes down.
