What bugs me about this whole "apologise for Britain" ritual on holiday is how fake and self-flattering it is. You fly into St Lucia on a package deal, spend money at a resort owned by some overseas company, tip a guy cleaning up after tourists, then do a little moral performance so you can feel like the enlightened Brit in the room. If you actually care about the legacy of slavery, start with how these islands are still set up to serve wealthy visitors while locals get the scraps, and how our own politicians now wave in mass migration and cheap labour at home like none of this history taught us anything. I don't think random people need to grovel for crimes from centuries ago. Show respect, spend properly, learn something, stop treating guilt like a cocktail garnish.
