My issue with the whole Lorentzen style of criticism is that it turns "I don't like this language" into a moral verdict on the writer. Academic prose can be bloated, sure. A lot of it is. But some critics act like anything outside clean magazine English is a scam, and that's just anti-curiosity dressed up as plain speaking. If you're a critic, your job isn't to sneer at difficulty on sight. It's to figure out what the author is trying to do, then tell us if it works.
