Hard to watch us do this loop again. BP getting pushed toward a new deepwater project in the Gulf after everything that happened in 2010 feels less like energy policy and more like collective amnesia. I get that oil demand didn't vanish and I'm not under the illusion we can flip a switch to all clean power next year. But opening fresh high-risk offshore drilling while insurers are pulling back from climate losses and Gulf communities keep taking hits from storms is just backwards. If we're going to use fossil fuels during a transition, fine, then squeeze more efficiency out of what we already produce and stop pretending every new project is some patriotic necessity. "Drill more" is not a serious long-term plan. It's an easy slogan with someone else's coastline attached.
