The student loan mess is one of those places where both parties love slogans more than functioning policy. I don't think every dollar of college debt should just vanish, and colleges should be on the hook for some of this too. But killing income-based repayment that kept payments tied to what people actually earn is just dumb. If your monthly bill jumps 2x or 4x overnight, people don't become more responsible, they miss rent, skip car repairs, put off kids, and default. That's not fiscal discipline, it's chaos with a press release. If conservatives want to say personal responsibility, fine, then go after tuition inflation and shady programs too, not just the 29-year-old teacher getting buried.
